BAKING cakes and sweet bakes CHOCOLATENovember 26, 2007

Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Pound

By Shaheen

‘This cake is my newest fixation. And it’s so easy to make! Just make the batter and push it in the oven. My grandma followed this recipe for family birthdays:

225g butter
225g sugar
225g flour
4 eggs
½ tsp baking powder
1 tsp zest of orange/lime/lemon
1 tsp vanilla essence
150g chocolate chips

  1. Preheat the oven at 170°C and grease a 11×4 inch loaf tin, (or something to that effect)
  2. In a big bowl cream the butter and sugar together and beat till fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time. (Break the eggs in a separate bowl, lest they be spoilt and ruin the entire batter)
  3. Stir in the vanilla and orange zest.
  4. Sift the flour and baking powder together. Add this to butter mixture and fold till just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips and whatever you like.
  5. Bake it for about 1 hour 15 minutes.
  6. It’s ready to be eaten!

I love how soft and moist it turned out to be. I think I’ll add some cocoa powder (more chocolate :D) and walnuts for added texture the next time. For now, just spread some Nutella over a warm slice of the cake and have it with a glass of hot milk. Simply delicious!

Of course, you can look at the latest version of the chocolate chip cake!
