Zürich is the perfect little city for a weekend break. It’s small, easy to navigate and doesn’t overwhelm – there’s no pressure to quickly work through a checklist of popular monuments and museum. It’s really all about walking from one chocolate shop to another, in and around Bahnhofstrasse, until you’ve had your fill.
I did a bit of digging and came up with a list of chocolate shops and markets in Zürich. I ran the list by my new local friend and blogger, Kerrin, who conducts chocolate tours in Zürich. She approves! If you’re in Zürich, you need to book yourself a chocolate date with her.
Chocolate Shops in Zürich
Honold Rennweg 53, 8001 Zürich
I took Kerrin’s recommendation of trying their Lotti’s Best chocolate, and it did not disappoint. It was made of feuilletine, tonka and sea salt.
Sprüngli Bahnhofstrasse 21, 8001 Zürich
When we had friends visiting us from Zürich they brought us a box of Sprüngli. Locals pride themselves in introducing visitors to this Zürich institution. They sell their version of their macaron, luxemburgerlis, too. They make lovely truffles and beautifully packaged gift boxes. The day I was there, they were handing out free cones of pistachio ice cream dipped in chocolate. Mmmm. They have shops all over the city, but the one at Bahnhofstrasse is the one to go to.
Läderach Bahnhofstrasse 106, 8001 Zürich
I wouldn’t have been here if it weren’t for Kerrin who pointed out they they have huge slabs of chocolate barks for sale in different flavours. We also tried their mini mousses.
Aeschbach (Marktgasse 9, 8001 Zürich) and Truffe (Schlüsselgasse 12, 8001 Zürich)
These are two chocolate shops that were on my list but I couldn’t make it to. Truffe comes highly recommended, but was unfortunately closed for the summer when I visited.
Restaurants, Markets, and other favourite shops in Zürich
Sternen Grill Theaterstrasse 22, 8001 Zürich
When you feel like you have had enough chocolate and need something savory, head to Sternen Grill in Bellevue to pick up a bratwurst and Appenzeller cheese tart, and sit by the lake in the company of swans.
Café Péclard Napfgasse 4, 8001 Zürich
This bijou tea and pastry café complete with its charming cash register is the perfect little spot in the old town of Zürich to enjoy some apple strudel, chocolate gugelhopf and hot chocolate (or cold in the summer). Utterly beautiful interiors and a lovely little courtyard with a fountain for warmer days. A walk around the old town after is a must.
Movenpick Theaterstrasse 8, 8001 Zürich
You can’t go to Switzerland and not try their now famous local brand of ice-cream, Movenpick. We got the double cream of gruyere with meringue bits.
Markets
Zürich has quite a few markets. Bürkliplatz is a smaller market while Oerlikon is the larger one. I have never seen prettier flowers anywhere. Arjun got me a giant sunflower and I walked all over town with it.
Chäs Vreneli Münsterhof 7, 8001 Zürich
Where you can fill up on your Swiss cheese needs.
Schwarzenbach Münstergasse 19, 8001 Zürich
This really makes you feel like you’ve walked into the past. A beautiful grocer’s shop selling a fantastic selection of ingredients. They also roast coffee and sell it at their shop next door.
