Colour at the Farmers’ Market

October 17, 2010

The crispest red cabbage (shouldn’t it be called purple cabbage instead?). So crisp, you can hear a loud snap when you pinch a cabbage leaf between your fingers.

The fattest chillies. Perfect for stuffing.
Green chillies

The most vibrant mint leaves. My current obsession.

The prettiest marigolds (for the Dusshera festivities).
Marigold

The freshest greens.

Spinach and Fenugreek

Pretty, slender beets.
Beets

The smelliest garlic. Everybody loves garlic. If you don’t, I’m not sure if we can be friends.

The best part: Meeting Anand Bhave – an architecture professor who paints with flowers, teaches origami and makes great furniture from recycled paper. It’s so sturdy, everyone can sit on it together.  Pictured here: Me, my awesome new friend Sheena and Hayley on an Anand Bhave recycled table.

And of course, there is some music.

What do you love at your farmers market?

LOL, first time I’ve heard beets and sexy in the same breath. And I agree with you on garlic – it needs to have its own step on the food pyramid.

Lovely pics Shaheen. We have been to Farmer’s market today and got some juiciest Asian pears, Pluots and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice. Also, some green onion slab bread. Yum!

I love that you think beets are sexy: love beets! And those marigolds are so pretty.

What an incredible farmer’s market!! I live in the Midwest and there usually isn’t anything as incredible here except during our peak season, which lasts for about a month or so. I can almost taste and smell the images!

I am kind of new to your blog and I am just loving it! This post in particular caught me eye. I love the sights, sounds, and smells of the open-air markets in India. (Got to visit a few years back, my husband was born and raised in Mumbai.)

Nice pics… the beet definitely look good… generally they are sold in the market minus the greens. I hope our bhajiwalas realise that beets with greens will sell :-)

This makes me miss India so much. Especially the big Marigolds…I hate how flowers don’t really smell as pretty here as they do in India. Keep up the good work my purple foodie. :) BTW, looking at the mint is making me crave a mojito!

I came across your blog after it was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald. Great work. The post on cinammon rolls has my mouth watering and ready to give them a whirl! Great pictures of the farmers’ market – good job!
