Hey everyone. I hope you’re enjoying your time spent reading the blog, because I sure am happy to have you over!
I just wanted to drop a note letting everyone know that I’ve decided to migrate
PurpleFoodie.com from the current platform, Blogger, to the more friendly WordPress. It’s a tough, tough task, but I’ve begun the process (with
some all help from orangefoodie).
This is not really meant to be a tutorial but simply a diary of how the process develops. But if you do have any questions in your own migration, feel free to email me – arjun(at)purplefoodie.com – or leave a comment on this post!
For now, I’m testing the migration process with a new domain –
ThePurpleFoodie.com, so you can jump over anytime (caution: it’s not pretty!) to have a look at how things are going. It’s going to take time, but the blog will remain on Blogger until I know it’s completely fine to make the switch.
As things currently stand,
- I’ve bought hosting and another domain name
- I’ve taken a backup of the blog (posts and comments) and migrated it successfully to WordPress
- Robots.txt’d it to prevent duplicate content on search engines (removed it now)
- Migrate feed
- Work on the formatting of posts (and check links)
- Categorise Posts
- Checked archives, permalinks
I still need to
- Work on the design and layout a bit
- Upload images and change links
- Add some plugins
- and a lot more!
Wish me luck!
Update : 8 May – This is happening today so you may (or will) experience some changes for the next couple of days. It is by no means the finished article and I hope you will bear with me for these few days. I promise that by the end of it, PurpleFoodie.com will emerge a much more powerful, stable, and well-designed site.
Update : Late 8 May – Migration complete. Please comment with any and all issues that you see. I recognise most of the larger issues and will be working on them. Word on any browser or Operating System compatibility issues would be appreciated.
Update : May 23 – Lots of stuff completed. LOTS of minor things remain. Good fun, though.

It's a fun process. Tedious, but fun.
Good luck! I just did the same thing. It's a lot of work but definitely worth it.
Hey Sook, nice blog!
Did you have any problems migrating the archives over?
thepurplefoodie.com is just for testing right? don't change the domain name.
of course, it's just for testing. later everything will be on purplefoodie.com and thepurplefoodie.com will forward to purplefoodie.com.
I tried to migrate, and it didn't work out for me. I guess I need more helpers around b/c I now think Blogger is much more friendly. The only thing wordpress has, in my opinion, is better themes. It is much more slick and professional-looking. However, on blogger, it is much more easier to post photos and move things around.
Once I find someone more techie than I, I may migrate, but I don't know. I've gone through some terrible experiences with the migration only to return to Blogger. I'm fine with Blogger now after all of that mess and the headaches and wasted time and money. I know you'll have better luck.
good luck on that!
Memoria, there are lots of tutorials online that will help you migrate without having to pay anyone. Though you definitely need to have a basic understanding of html, css, hosting, ftp, linking, etc. It can get quite complex otherwise. If you have any specific questions, you can always email me.
Wordpress is much better than Blogger for a variety of reasons, actually.
Firstly, and probably most importantly, is that the data is YOURS. You are hosting it on your own server, so unlike Blogger, where it is hosted with Google, you actually own your data. Not technically true with Google.
Secondly, the themes, as you pointed out, and the variety of plugins.
Thirdly, the developer community that helps you improve your blog
These are just some of the reasons why many people, including me, think that Wordpress is far superior to Blogger.
