India on everybody’s plate

October 21, 2007

When my grandma returned from her trip to London, just like every year we expected tonnes of goodies. I remember the times when I was younger; she used to get packets of instant soup, exotic fruits and flavoured yoghurts that weren’t available here in India. We all devoured the various foods; the kiwis were especially reserved for me.

However, this time around it was quite different. Instead of getting us samples of various English delicacies, she got us ready to eat mattar paneer, sambhar, and pani puri masala amongst others to try! This is when I realised that Indian food is truly getting global.

With the rate at which Indian restaurants are mushrooming all over UK, Indian food now surpasses Chinese food in popularity, with an average British family eating Indian food thrice a week! Not just food, but also the art, culture, festivals and spiritual gurus have made their mark.

The chicken tikkas and the curries seem to have found a place in every kitchen. So have the frozen stuffed parathas. Indian food is getting the respect it deserves. I don’t think any other cuisine matches up to the Indian sub-continent flavours. With the myriad flavours and spices that go into the preparation of a single dish, giving it its distinctive taste, there can be no other cuisine quite like it.
